My hamster keeps biting zoo zone 2 mesh
My hammy Oreo has a lovely big cage with plenty of things to do, lots of chew toys and a 28cm Trixie wheel but in the middle of the night he starts chewing the mesh on the top of the cage and the hole where the bottle goes! It is super loud and annoying! I usually take him out and try and entertain him for a bit to stop him being bored but I don’t know what else I can do in the cage to stop that!

Re: My hamster keeps biting zoo zone 2 mesh
First thing is maybe just to give him more to keep his brain active when you're not able to entertain him yourself. Do you scatter feed or give him any homemade food puzzles? Chew toys are fine but hiding their dinner will keep them much more interested. Even the end of a toilet roll tube with a bit of paper left on is a good one so they can spend time shredding it themselves for their nest. Tbh none of mine have ever enjoyed chewing anything I wanted them to chew!
Secondly if he knows chewing his mesh gets him attention and fun things he's going to do it more. It is a stress behaviour and if they get in the habit it's not always something they can stop but you can try and not reinforce it with anything positive on top of that. If you're going to take him out make sure you're not doing it when he's chewing the mesh and wait until he stops.
You can also block up where he likes to chew with cardboard or a hemp mat or anything that's going to make it harder to nibble on the mesh.

Re: My hamster keeps biting zoo zone 2 mesh
The only thing my hamster likes to chew on is that cheap whimzee dog chew thingy. The more expensive hamster chew toys and "boredom breakers" have no other than decorative purpose.

I do scatter feed! But when I scatter it everywhere he picks it all up in his mouth within minutes so it doesn’t entertain him for long! I sometimes cut up toilet roll tubes and put treats inside which he is also amazing at getting open straight away 😂 he also never seems to shred up the toilet roll tubes when I give them to him! He loves the hanging bar treats but they look really sweet and I don’t want him having a lot... it entertains him quite a bit though! Thank you both
