Litter tray problem
My baby Syrian won't use his litter tray yet he was at the breeders. He's weeing in one of the small houses on the hamster heaven cage instead and I don't know how to stop it and get him to do it in the correct place, any ideas?

Re: Litter tray problem
Have you tried putting some peed on substrate in the litter tray? They won't always use a litter tray in the place you want them to you may have to try moving it till you find a place he will use.

Re: Litter tray problem
Yes I've tried putting weed on substrate in the tray, maybe he doesn't like the sand?

Re: Litter tray problem
Most hams seem fine with sand, you could try just putting substrate in & see if that makes a difference.
How long have you had him now? It can take a while for them to settle on a permanent pee spot so he may change to somewhere else as he settles in.

Re: Litter tray problem
Success! changed the sand to pellets which the breeder used and obviously he was used to and changed to the corner nearest his bed, he immediately came out and used it.

Re: Litter tray problem
What kind of pellets are they? It's good that he's responded to something familiar but most pellets aren't always safe to use.

Re: Litter tray problem
Glad he used the familiar pellets. As cypher says there are some unsafe ones out there. Which ones do you have?

Re: Litter tray problem
The breeder gave them to me, they're back to nature pellets.

Re: Litter tray problem
I think those are paper so they should be ok.
