Syrian Suddenly Peeing Everywhere and diabetic worries
Hello everyone,
So the majority of you are aware that i have a syrian hamster named Bella who has some ummm interesting quirks? Recently, she has started peeing quite a bit whenever i take her out of her cage for playtime. This is a habit which she has only recently got into and it has never happened before. In addition, i am worried about her being possibly diabetic. I am aware that younger syrian hamsters pee in small concerntrated amounts but i was wondering when they start to let out a bit more urine as Bella's pee is more than a small amount (not an absolute huge amount of pee though). I am just concerned that if she is still meant to be peeing in small amounts it could be a sign of her being diabetic despite me carefully monitoring her sugar levels.

Re: Syrian Suddenly Peeing Everywhere and diabetic worries
Diabetes isn't normally a problem with Syrian hamsters, increased peeing is more likely to be a sign of a UTI or a kidney problem, it's usually older hams that tend to have a problem with kidneys not functioning as well as they did & not coping with a high protein intake too well, kidney issues are less likely in a younger ham.
Sometimes with a UTI you will see other symptoms like signs of blood in the urine or just a general appearance of being unwell but it's not always easy to tell if that is what the problem is.

Re: Syrian Suddenly Peeing Everywhere and diabetic worries
As Cypher says, Syrians don't usually get diabetes. If it's only when she's out of the cage it could be fear or scent marking, or both. Put some cardboard down! As long as she seems fine in herself I wouldn't worry. Our hamster pee's in his potty and it's surprising how much there is.

Re: Syrian Suddenly Peeing Everywhere and diabetic worries
Thank you very much both of you for the knowledge that you have shared with me.
Serendpity, i believe it is scent marking and she shows absolutely no sign of being scared, she just loves exploring!
Thanks again
