Why is my hamster scratching inside her house
I have recently bought a syrian 3days ago.
When she wakes up i can hear her moving her food around inside the house at the base of the cage. She also will be making banging/scratching noise inside the house shes in.
Im scared to lift the house to see what shes doing incase i scare her as shes still new.
The house has slightly tipped on the sides from where shes burrowed under the house. Is she trying to lift it up? Im confused. I dont want her to fall behind on taming if i intervene.

Re: Why is my hamster scratching inside her house
That sounds like totally natural behaviour, nothing to worry about!
She may be making a hoard then taking food from it, digging around to make a nest, things like that are all good & no need to intervene.
How big is her house? They will naturally burrow underneath & they often get tipped up when they do that but more so if it's a bit small.

Re: Why is my hamster scratching inside her house
Thank you. Im slightly more at ease now.The house is the one that came with the Barney cage she is in. The corner house. Roughly 20cm at the sides then it curves at the front for the opening. (Hope i described it properly)
Will it be ok if i brought the house forward an inch or two away the cage corner? Only because the when she moves things inside, it makes an awful racket against the cage wall.

Re: Why is my hamster scratching inside her house
By the way the side that has tipped, or maybe the correct word is dipped, is the corner of the house that meets the cage corner

Re: Why is my hamster scratching inside her house
They can be very noisy sometimes! That house should be ok, I would pull it out of the corner a bit & stuff some substrate around it in the corner to stop it banging or she might just move it back again

Re: Why is my hamster scratching inside her house
Thank you again. I will wait until later when she wakes up and move her house forward without startling her. So far shes being very good with us.

Re: Why is my hamster scratching inside her house
Sounds pretty normal to me Ghost would do the same, when he burrowed under his wheel he actually tipped it over. Make sure that there is a good depth 4" minimum for your hammy to burrow in too if you can.

Re: Why is my hamster scratching inside her house
Thank you for the advice Rads. I think mine is currently around 3inches. I was thinking to put more under her house since she does burrow quite a lot in there.
