How to hold a hamster
My hamster's pretty tamed, he's a male hybrid and it's taken me a few months to get him to be as comfortable with me as he is right now. I can stroke his back and hand feed him but he still doesn't like being picked up. I've tried using a toilet roll and lifting it for a few seconds when he's inside to get him used to being lifted, but he's still timid and afraid. How do I get him comfortable with being picked up?

Re: How to hold a hamster
Will he climb right on to your hand when you hand feed him? I've found just letting them do that for a while then once they're comfortable with it I begin to lift my hand a fraction & gradually build up, if that doesn't work you could try something like a mug, let him climb into that then put your hand in front so he can walk out onto it.
Or you could just cup both hands under him & lift him slightly that way.
Whichever you choose to do if he's a timid ham just go slowing increasing height & time very gradually.

Re: How to hold a hamster
You should seriously consider getting a Syrian. I held Heaven real close to me for about 5 min. She didn't move at all, or wiggle around. She just soaked all the love in. Then I gently put her back in her cage last night. That's the second time I held her like that.
She acted more like a cat than a hamster. She would have let me hold her longer but I thought that 5 min was enough
I have 6 dwarves but I can't hold them with 2 hands. I can't really hold any of them for long

Re: How to hold a hamster
It's a shame that your dwarf hams don't enjoy being held or having cuddles CB, good that you have Heaven for that!
I've never found hybrids difficult to handle but some can take longer to get comfortable with hands than others.
