Smile Handling behaviour

Poppy has never bitten anyone. She happily lets me pick her up, yet when I want to cuddle her, she can't stay still for more than 2 seconds. She is always wriggling somewhere. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to calm her so that she is more placid?

If Poppy is under 6 months old, then this is completely normal. The sitting still stage is not an additional stage in the taming process - rather, it is one that hamsters reach when they are older and less energetic. Some hamsters never slow down to the extent that they will sit still on you, but most will eventually walk slowly across your hands rather than running across them like a maniac! If she is still young, it would be highly surprising and unusual if she weren't so energetic. Week by week, she will gradually slow down as she gets older. It doesn't happen all at once. But, in a few weeks time you will look back and see that she has changed a lot. Even more so in a few months. In my experience, they are much less active by the time they reach 6 months old and are fully grown. However, every hamster is an individual. Some do stay very active and you can't force them to be cuddly!

Sounds like she is just very active! Females do tend to be more energetic than males, so that may play a part. Just make sure she has lots of opportunities to play. A playpen big enough for you to sit in with her would provide an opportunity for play and bonding as she could climb all over you!
