I have a new hamster and I have some questions.
Hello everyone this is my first time posting on this forum which is very exciting, but I have a question about my new hamster. She's a female Syrian hamster and I just bought her today and I brought her home and put her in her bin cage. (the bin is 121 quarts) When I put her into her new home at first she seemed very curious and looked around a bit but now, all she does is go to a corner of the cage and just hide, she doesn't go into her little house she actually goes behind it or behind the wheel. She is drinking and eating her food so that isn't an issue. I have attached a photo to show you what I mean. My girlfriend who has owned a hamster before says this is normal for them as they are still adjusting to their surroundings. I know I should give her a few days to get to know her new home but I would just like to know if this is normal hamster behavior, it's kinda worrying me. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated!

Re: I have a new hamster and I have some questions.
Welcome to HC & congrats on you new ham
Her behaviour is normal for a new ham, it can take them a few days to settle in & gain confidence.
Her house isn't really suitable though, plastic isn't good & the house is quite transparent so it won't be dark in there.
I would provide her with a cardboard box for now, no base & a hole cut out for a door, or some large bendy bridges to go under & plenty of deep substrate & a nice pile of shredded plain white toilet tissue to make a nest.
If she has some nice hideouts she will feel a lot safer & probably begin to feel confident with you much quicker.

Re: I have a new hamster and I have some questions.
All my syrian hamsters love to have dark houses on top of huge piles of substrate (I use a paper based one called fitch). They burrow down and also block off the entrance to the houses with more fitch.
They have loo paper as nesting material. My latest hamster (Robin) has made a nest behind his wheel and has left himself uncovered as your hamster has. I put loads of loo roll into his cage and he is now completely hidden in a paper mountain!
I am sure your girl will soon be out and about once she has adjusted to life in her new home.

Your hamster is behaving normally for a new hamster. I've had my new dwarf hamster 5 days and she did the same thing. She still changes where she sleeps.

Hello and welcome to HC!
Everyone has already given you great advice. She's very cute, does she have a name yet?

Hello and Welcome to HC and congratulations on your hammy.
Perfectly normal behaviour, giving them shade and cover makes them feel safe. Wooden bendy bridges are great for that as well as a cardboard boxes.
