Default Strange pose when stroked

We are gradually getting her used to us and now we are able to put our hand in the cage and stroke her gently, and when we do she lifts her tail upwards and arches her back downwards, somewhat like a cat. And when we stop she stays frozen in the position for a brief time. Is that a sign she enjoys it or is it fear?

It is the posture a female adopts when she is in season and ready to mate. It is called standing. Female syrians come in to heat every 4th night and it is a protective mechanism for the males to allow mating. Usually they would fight on meeting but the stand and trance like status allows mating to occur. Some females will adopt the stand by any pressure on the back or a stoke when in heat. You may smell a musky smell from her too!

Souffle, thank you for that interesting info about the females posture. This is why I love this forum.

I always call it "tail-uppies" as I remember Souffle calling it that too and this cute little song by Souffle's daughter:

No I'd keep stroking her and getting her used to it then. Lift and lay her down again. It's nothing to worry about. It's just a natural response to the pressure on the back. It's the best way to get them to stay still for more than 2 seconds!
