Peeing in her hamster ball
The title says it all:
Wasabi has a wee corner and it changes every time I clean her cage. I put her in her hamster ball about once a week and notices she's started peeing in it. I took her out and cleaned it and let it dry and put her back in the next week and guess what? She did it again! Does anyone know how to get her how to stop doing this? I need all the help I can get!

Re: Peeing in her hamster ball
Peeing in the ball is a completely normal behavior (unfortunately for us!). It's because they pee in balls (amongst the other issues like ventilation) that you should only allow them to exercise in one for 10-15 minute intervals so that they aren't trapped in there with their own waste. There's really no way to prevent/stop it, the best thing to do would be to instead try a playpen or closely monitored free-ranging. Though hamster balls are debated, and not technically considered unsuitable, they really don't provide much for hamsters in the ways of stimulation and exercise. Plus, balls are considered cruel or even deadly for every other species of rodent, so why are they acceptable in the hamster community? Whether they're dangerous or not though doesn't matter considering the fact that hamsters explore their world by leaving scent trails that they follow, and by examining objects with their whiskers. A ball blocks off both of these abilities which really makes you wonder if it's doing anything at all! There's also the potential for caught toes and nails inside the ventilation slits so if you can avoid using the ball, I would. Playpens can be made fairly easily and for little to no cost at all. You could even use something as simple as a bathtub with a towel laid down and a couple of boxes In the end, the choice is yours, but it's just a personal opinion of mine that balls don't really offer much. Best wishes!

I agree completely with Drago. It's also considered unsuitable for all Dwarf hamsters, so it shouldn't really be different for Syrians.

Re: Peeing in her hamster ball
Yeah, I have never used a hamster ball for my hams so I don't have a solution except to shorten the amount of time spent in the ball. As the others have said, hamsters much prefer supervised floor time or a playpen. It's also more fun to watch them sniffing and climbing around! Plus, they get a lot of stimulation from it.

Re: Peeing in her hamster ball
She's only in the hamster ball for about 5 minutes and I like the playpen idea. Does anyone know how to make one?

Re: Peeing in her hamster ball
If you're willing to make it, the playpen would be so beneficial
Check this one out Stylish playpen

Re: Peeing in her hamster ball
I made her a playpen and she just walks around and then falls asleep in the middle. Is this normal?

Re: Peeing in her hamster ball
They can take awhile to get used to a playpen. Have her wheel and some tubes, toys in the playpen. Arrange it with things she likes and possibly hide food/treat around to encourage her.
