Potential issue regarding potty training Dennis-Sama
So I saw this potential issue when i put the perspex in his habitat, Dennis-Sama is pooping where he sleeps!?!
When i emptied his habitat to put the perspex in i cleaned it out but and put the soiled bedding/susbstrate in the potty area to try and make him use that.
My question to you all is, hoe do i prevent this behaviour? I have tried to entice him to use a designated area ( ie not his bed) to no avail. Do i persist with this? Should i completely clean his bedding area in the hope he will not use that, but if so will he also stop using it as a home ane move elsewhere?
As far as i can tell he isnt peeing there, and I am using a small dish with potty bits in where i want him to go.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Dennis-Sama's servant owners!

Also, his cuteness is significantly less when he wakes up with poop stuck to his face :/

Re: Potential issue regarding potty training Dennis-Sama
Poop is often done in or close to the house/nest. It is normally dry so doesn't cause problems. The hamster will also eat some.
The toilet area is mainly for pee. If a toilet/pee area is established it can help save time and substrate when cleaning out.
Some of the potty litters sold are not liked by the hamster and they won't use it. Sand may be better or even the same substrate as the rest of the cage, but in a container.
I found my Syrians are easier to toilet train than my dwarf hamster.

Don't worry about poo, you don't need to clean that out too often.
Most dwarf hams tend to pee either in the wheel or the sand bath or both which actually makes life easier!
I wouldn't use any of the potty litters available, hams often won't use them & I'm not convinced they're safe tbh.

Re: Potential issue regarding potty training Dennis-Sama
I agree with what's been said, it's totally normal for them to defecate in the nest! Plus, it's very rare that you can control where a hamster goes (other than when urinating) so it's not really worth a try. I wouldn't use potty litter as they're usually clay or crystal based and aren't safe for hamsters unfortunately. Instead, you can use sand or something like yesterday's news cat litter Best wishes

Re: Potential issue regarding potty training Dennis-Sama
I am lucky because Mocho does use his hamster potty when he gets up and can be bothered to cross the cage to it which is each evening. However he does go close to his nest, no doubt when he is too sleepy for the long walk. I have solved this one by buying a Rodipet house with more than one room. He pees in the outer room ( trying to aim in the corner dish from Rodipet but often missing!) so his nest area remains dry and so I do not disturb it very often. The en suite bathroom solution may be one to think about! Nothing is too up market for our hams!
