Hamsters biting?
Can anyone help me with biting hamsters? I always wash my hands before playing with my hamsters but 2 of them still go for my hand instead of the treat/food I am giving them.

Re: Hamsters biting?
Which species of hamster do you have & how long have you had them?
Are they biting in or out of the cage or both?
Some hams can be a bit territorial about their cages & do better with handling & interacting out of the cage in a safe play area & are less likely to bite.
Always start by offering treats from your fingers so they can just take it from you, when offering food on your hand it can help to bury your fingers in the substrate at first so they aren't on offer for biting!
A lot of hams can take some time to figure out where food/treats end & hands begin so often bite a little or nibble but soon get over it.

Re: Hamsters biting?
They are both boys one is a Dj hamster and one is a teddy bear, I have had the teddy bear for over 4 months, I could give him a treat but I got to be quick about it and he bites in and out of the cage.I have had the dj for about 2 weeks but he also will take treats from me but if I dont be care full he will bite my hand pretty hard.

Re: Hamsters biting?
By DJ I assume you are referring to the "Djungarian" hamster, and being that he is new, he may need more time in order to settle in. Biting can be a sign that they have not been tamed well or correctly. The taming process begins with adding tissue with your scent on it into the cage with your hamsters so they use it as nesting material and become used to you. Then you can start talking quietly by the cage or simply hang around it so that he becomes used to your presence. Then, once he's comfortable, begin to stroke him and then progress very slowly to handling. Only a few inches off the ground at a time. I'd try starting again with the taming process and see how it goes. Hope they warm up to you soon

Re: Hamsters biting?
I agree, it does sound as though you need to go back to the start with taming, go slowly, one small step at a time.
