Hamster not using wheel
Hi. We have had a Syrian female hamster for about 2 and Half weeks now. She has a 12" silent spinner wheel but she doesn't seem to run on it, she just puts food in the bottom. Any reasons why?

Re: Hamster not using wheel
I find that the silent spinner wheels tend to jam up and become hard to move over time, especially the twelve inch version. Have you checked to make sure she can move it? How old is your ham? Sometimes hamsters don't like their wheels, it just depends on your ham. It's also possible she's using it when you're asleep or not watching her. I don't think it's too much to worry about unless she has other symptoms that something might be wrong

Re: Hamster not using wheel
I agree with Drago. I wouldn't worry about it too much because some hamsters just decide they don't like running on the wheel, or she's just using it when you aren't aware. I hardly ever see my hamster running on the wheel unless I wake up randomly in the night.
Just check that it is still spinning freely so you can rule out that option and then don't worry.

Re: Hamster not using wheel
The new design silent spinners often don't work so well, if it is a bit stiff it might be worth thinking about a different wheel.

Re: Hamster not using wheel
Hi. Thanks for all your replies. Our hamster is 11 weeks old. I think I would hear all the food move about if she was using her wheel. Wheel is brand new, got it a couple of weeks ago when we got the hamster.

Re: Hamster not using wheel
Have you tried spinning it? It's probably too stiff. The silent spinners had a manufacturing change a year or so ago and weren't spinning well. Sounds like it hasn't improved yet! I would send/take it back for a refund and get something else. The 28cm Trixie wheel is popular. I have a 12" Silent Runner which I love - it's not the cheapest wheel but spins very easily, is totally silent and has a safe sturdy stand. You can only get them online
Silent Runner 12 Inch
Hamsters do need their wheels and need the exercise - they also sometimes put food in them, but if she's not using it I think it is probably not spinning well enough. I sent for one to see if it was as bad as reported and found it hardly spun at all.

Re: Hamster not using wheel
Thanks for the reply. Yes I have tried spinning it and didn't think it seemed too bad, but then I'm not a hamster!! It was not cheap either. I think it cost about £21. Will think about looking at a different wheel.

Silent runners are pretty good wheels. As the name implies, they're completely quiet, and they're easy to move and don't get stiff like the overpriced silent spinners. I have a silent spinner for my one ham Duncan, and I've constantly needed to modify it to make it not tighten up. Wodent wheels are also fairly good from what I've heard

Re: Hamster not using wheel
Hi Guys. Have now ordered a new wheel for pumpkin, so hopefully she will try running on it. Thanks for all the advice.

Re: Hamster not using wheel
Okay so I have the same problem but with the Flying Saucer. I got little Felix Yesterday (1/24/17) and He does not use his wheel! I watched Him for a little while and he just runs around his cage like an obstacle course. I dont know if it's because He does not like it or He does not know how to use it I will buy a Silent Spinner soon to see if its just He does not like it or does not know how.
