Hiding food in bathroom
Yestarday I noticed that Bilbo was hiding his food in his litter box then his usual corner where he burys his treats. Nothing has moved in his cage and he's always used his tray as his bathroom and he seems to still be using it as his toilet but there's also a half eaten yogurt drop in there and I've caught him burying and digging up food from in there. Is there a reason why he could be doing this? I'm not super worried but it seems rather bizarre from his usual tidy self.

Re: Hiding food in bathroom
Wouldn't worry me at all. This is a common habit that can start for no other reason than the hamster suddenly thinking it would be a good idea. Even if their bright ideas aren't always that tidy to us, they are still relatively primitive animals and don't know better. It won't do him any harm, we just find it dirty because we think too much (:

Re: Hiding food in bathroom
Mine have always stored their food in their litter tray, my last hamster used to only keep fresh food and treats in there then keep regular food in a different place! Really cool, she obviously knew it was special so wanted to keep it there for midnight snacks during wee breaks

Re: Hiding food in bathroom
Like others have said, no need to worry. My hams do things like this on occasion and though in my eyes it's gross, they see things very differently.

Re: Hiding food in bathroom
I have seen information suggesting that with elderly hamsters they may urinate on their food to soften it,which sounds extremely unsanitary to humans, but to hamsters could be perfectly logical. This could potentially be connected to that sort of theory.

Re: Hiding food in bathroom
I'm happy it dosnt mean anything major, I've noticed he does have trouble eating recently, and his teeth aren't to long he's just extremely old. I've been giving him little bits of softer food so he must just be hiding is somewhere else then, haha. Thank you
