Question ... My hamster just licked me?

So me and my ham are working on trusting each other... Mostly I am more jumpy than he is lol. Anyway I had my hand close to the cage and he licked me through the bars. I have never had a hamster do anything but bite me. (hence me being jumpy) so I put make hand close to the bars again and he licked me multiple times... I guess what I am asking is why would he do that? I washed my hands without soap a couple times to get rid of smells... So I do t think I smelled like food. It was just really weird and to have him do it multiple times I am now curious why he would lol.

our ww hybrid licks too.. mostly when we smell of food, but sometimes she just licks for no reason. it's a good thing, i would say. that he trust you enough to have a taste by licking instead of nibbing
I wouldn't worry at all. I'm quite jumpy too and her licking instead of biting actually eases me up a bit

I was super surprised when he didn't bite me. I am so used to being bitten... I normally take pets from people that don't want them anymore so my animals almost never get human contact before I get them. Alot of times they never even really tame. This hamster is the most chill unafraid little thing I have ever seen. And the fact that he licked me totally just proved he is a weirdo in my mind and I love it XD

we have a syrian and a ww hybrid. seeing the difference between them amuses me everyday. the ww is a total attention seeker and won't sit still for a moment. the syrian is the sweetest little timid thing who, after months of taming, now just sits in my hand or wherever he chooses to for half an hour, completely still. he actually climbed onto my shoulder one time and just layed there watching tv with us for half an hour.
i actually have a video of zelda licking the hand, after having eaten chicken on it

I have a couple rescues right now, they don't bite anymore (one was a biter), but they both hide. I got up early to have interaction with the robo and she needs a lot more work to ease her fears. But she's real nocturnal so it's so hard to get to the point of her eating treats out of my hand or running for cover when the lights are on. I have never seen her use her wheel before. I know she loves it though. I guess that's the chance you take when you rescue a pet that hasn't had a good beginning to life. I think that's nice that you continue to rescue pets.

I managed to get my old hamster, I took from someone to actually come and take treats from me when I was near his cage, but he would bite me through the bars and whenever he could if I didn't give him his treats and leave him alone. My gerbil will come and look at me and wait for me to drop them in but he doesn't like contact at all. And my birds hate having my hand in there cage, they still freak out after a year of having them. They are atleast ok with me being near them now. I just do my best to give them what they need, even if I don't get to touch them XD. I just love from a distance.
