Question Is yam okay?

This morning my Syrian hamster (unidentified gender and age, sorry) escaped from his cage from a faulty door lock. It gnawed quite a lot of sweet potato we had on the floor (was not a good idea, i know). I'm pretty sure the sugar content was high, but what will happen to my hamster? Will it die? Do I need to change its diet?

You need to rescue your hamster by making a bucket trap. Sorry I don't have the link but Erin's Animals has a great video on You Tube on how to make a bucket trap.

Question Re: Is yam okay?

Sweet potato should be on the safe list.
it sounds like you already caught your hamster?

Thank you both. Yes, I forgot to mention I've already caught my hamster. But the sweet potato's recommended serving is only 1-2 teaspoons every 1-2 days, and I'm pretty sure it ate already around 2 tablespoons. Now that I know it's not fatal, do I need to change my hamster's diet? I'm not sure that much consumption is good for him.

Sweet potato is only safe if cooked, if it was raw it's possible it could make him unwell so keep a close eye on him just in case.
