Question Rubbing against her cage?

I've seen this a few times with ham and i know usually wen hamsters rub on their bits they're marking their territory but I feel this is different. He walked up to the corner of his cage and relaxes on his back? the only times i've seen him do this was in his tube (where he was very anxious). Is this because his comfortable or is he scared??

I can't quite imagine how he walks up to a corner and relaxes on his back and rubs up against the cage If he has somewhere to retreat to, like a good sized house, he would probably go in it if he is scared. They can act a bit strange after a cage clean or something changing in the cage though, like a bit of a shock reaction.

I did a spot clean as you explained yesterday, yesterday, and got told he just relaxed on his back in a corner. Personally ive seen him do it before very randomly, perhaps after eating or something? He doesn't seem scared but whether he is or not is a different matter. Is this a step closer to the taming process?

They can go a bit stunned kind of sometimes if there's a change in their cage, especially during the first 2 or 3 weeks. Best to try and leave things mostly for the first 2 or 3 weeks. If he's rubbing he's probably scent marking so he can find his way around. Do you have a potty litter tray? That can really help. They tend to use them if you put them in the corner they've chosen to wee in then you just empty the potty wash it out and refill it every 5 to 7 days. And no spot cleaning needed Unless they pee in other places as well. Once he's been in the cage 2 or 3 weeks he'll be more familiarised and won't get so freaked about scent being removed.

I have this litter tray - it works really well - sits in a corner. Charlie pees in the very back corner and sits in the front and has a wash - it's his little bathroom. You can put chinchilla bathing sand in it - it soaks the pee up well and is a bit safer than potty litter. (Must be sand not dust). Most people use the Supreme one.

I just saw your other thread about his cage as well. Any change is probably affecting him more as the cage is small. Try and put lots of deep substrate in for now, I'm sure he'll appreciate it. And also maybe a carboard box with a hole cut in - under the shelf maybe - it'll make a nice dark place for him to nest so he feels safe.

If he has a bigger cage he'll be able to do more normal hamster behaviours - it can make quite a difference to their behaviour.
