Male or Female?

Hey guys, so I'm a fairly new hamster owner, I've previously owned a russian dwarf hamster, but this was a fair time ago. I'm not sure if this is the right place to be asking so please let me know if it isn't.

Anyway, I got my hammy in January so he's a few months old by now.The petshop said that it was a female, by checking its belows. A few weeks past and he was gradually growing (he's really big now) and his urine is becoming more smelly, as expected for a hammy. I'm not sure what gender my hamster is, because I haven't been able to handle him as of yet because he's not tame enough. Are there any signs I can look out for to determain what sex it is? I mean, it's got male parts but that could be something else?

You could put him in a glass cooking dish & look underneath (but you would have to know what your looking for) maybe look at pics of the different genders then you would know better or take him/her to the vets?

A syrian you should be able to tell much easier!

Thank you but the difficulty is it's very hard to see because it's smaller than what I see on my hammy.

With syrians its really easy to tell a male from a female, males have very large erm male danglys. Females don't have them but also females have a pointed butt and males have a more rounded one.

If it's a Syrian, that photo should help

Even if you can't see nipples - the bottom area is more rounded on a female and has the extra lumpy end on the male (more torpedo shaped bottom).

Hi XFH I was wondering if you wanted to talk about your taming troubles? I would expect you to be able to handle a Syrian you had for 6 months unless there were particular circumstances. The people here have a lot of experience and would be glad to try and help. So if you like, tell us more about you and your hammy.
