Those are cute pics but hamsters will still sleep even if they don't show signs of being uncomfortable with bright lights. Does your hammie have a dark house? I think you said he does? I have a RCD hammie that was under a bright light and I didn't know it wasn't good for her until I read it somewhere. I removed the light and she seem much relieved. Even in pet stores the hammies have to sleep under bright lights in the cages so customers can see them better but it doesn't mean that it is ideal.

He does have a dark house and he's filled it all up with substrate and bedding, so he clearly likes it. I'll check the nearby resale shop for lamps.

They do like round things to curl up in! charlie will also head for something round Coconut shell houses are popular round things to curl up in too - you could maybe put something like that or a mug even, in a darker part of the cage under the shelf.

I hate to say this but the cage does look quite small - they need a fair bit of floor space and overhead cover in a cage, like a shelf sometimes. A smaller cage can be ok if your hammy free roams or has plenty of out of cage time, but the minimum recommended floorspace size is about 70cm by 40cm for a dwarf hammy x

Oh, it is small. But that cage is only temporary. We should be moving him into his bin cage today, thank goodness.

I wish I could put the bubble in the bin cage but I can't see a way to do it. However, they were selling coconut houses at the pet store when I was there last, so I might go snag one so he definitely has something round to sleep in. Alas, I've never seen a coconut in a store here, so I can't go the DIY route. :P

That sounds good! I'm sure he'll love his new bin cage. Some coconut shells can be a bit scratchy inside anyway. Our hammy has a large house that is dark inside and he makes his own round ball of a nest, so no need to find anything specially Just give him lots of torn up strips of plain white toilet paper and he'll make something out of it. Charlie once made the most beautiful ball shaped nest out of strips of paper - it looked all woven - and a hole in the middle he used to go in and snuggle up inside!

He has a little cardboard house that he does that in! I got to see his handiwork when I was moving the house from the small cage to the bin cage today. He fills the house with substrate and toilet paper so there's nothing but a small little space to bundle up in. It's amazing.
