Default Are hamsters sensitive to light?

Should I try to give my hamster's cage an umbrella or something so he's not bothered when the lights are on in the room? I don't know if he'll be bothered or not.

It does cause the hamsters stress to be under bright lights. But just average household lighting & daylight shouldn't be a problem at all. An umbrella is a nice & cute thought though

If the light isn't too bright it will probably be fine, some are more sensitive than others but I've found Russian hams don't really seem to mind the light.

Hmm, okay. I'll give him a couple days then. I've just moved him into my bedroom and he hasn't really left his little cardboard house, but he's probably just uncomfortable with the change in environment. The light is on in here a lot more than in the living room, though, so I wanted to check. If he's still uncomfortable in a few days I'll see what I can do to give him some shade.

I think the main thing is make sure he has somewhere dark to go in his cage They need a good sized house/hide that is dark inside. A good option is a shoebox with a tunnel or bendy bridge over the door. Cut the bottom out of the shoebox, keeping the lid as a lift-off roof, cut a hole for a door in the front and put the bendy bridge over. Also if you have deep substrate your hammy can burrow to be out of the light.

Could you put on a bedside lamp? It would be enough for you to see what you were doing whilst keeping the rest of the room dark

My hammy doesn't like the bright bedroom light being on, so we use a touch lamp on the bedside table instead. The good thing about these is that you can adjust the level of brightness according to your hammy's mood/time of day. He is more active in his cage on the lowest setting, but is fine with the middle setting when he's running around on the bed for playtime

He has a couple hideaways but I don't want him to feel like he has to be in them all the time. I don't have a lamp, but I should probably get one. I could use the more focused light anyway. Then Ambrose's side of the room would be darker.

Oh good point. We only have lamps and the cage area is darker, but our hammy still only prefers coming out when it's dark! If he is having out of cage time when the lights are on, he always wants to crawl under something and won't sit for long without somewhere darker to go! Although food always distracts him from it!

Ambrose doesn't seem to be too bothered by the light, seeing as he's spent the last several hours that I've been home sleeping in a transparent plastic bubble.

Maybe the bubble is cooler but I like to believe he likes to sleep where he can see me~
