Default Hamster stays in his tube

Hey.
Since yesterday I've a WW Dwarf hamster and I've a cage with tubes. Yesterday he slept in his sleephouse but since this morning he stays in the tube. This way I can't get near him/touch him. He is also building his litter and food inventory in it.

Is this normal bc he's new or is there something I can do about it?

Bye,
Robin.

It's quite normal but the best thing you can do is just get rid of all the tubes, it can get very unhealthy if they sleep, eat & pee in the tubes & it can also make taming & interaction almost impossible.
They really don't need tubes, a nice size cage (min. of about 70x40 or bigger) with one large floor area, lots of substrate to dig in & they are much happier.

What kind of cage do you have? As cypher mentioned the hammies need a minimum of 360 Sq in. The pet stores sell tiny little cages with tubes thinking that's all they need. They shouldn't be sold in pet stores at all. It would be a good investment to upgrade, you wouldn't be sorry

Please disregard this post if you currently have a cage that meets the minimum or bigger (even better)!

As cypher said, it is normal - my syrian did the same in response to her first cage clean. The only way I could stop it was to change the layout so she didn't have the tube. Not a happy ham in the short term but better for her once she settled.

Hi. I posted on your other thread about the cage - it's too small really - the other one you have without the tubes is slightly better until you can get something else sorted. If you only got him yesterday he'll be a bit scared and could do to just stay in the non tube cage and settle in a bit. They need to find a routine in the cage and mark their territory so it feels familiar. Best to leave him to settle in for 2 or 3 days (in the non tube cage which will be easier to spot clean).
