Syrian hamster waking when she hears us?
Hi I am new to the forum and new to hamster ownership! we are proud owners of a syrian hamster called Blodwynn! she is about 12 wks old and is much loved! She is housed in our utility room and we have always come and gone as we pleased and she hasn't been disturbed. She started storing food away around 2 wks ago and when ever we feed her she puts it all in her pouch and hides it in one corner. The thing i,'m not sure of is that now whenever she hears me in the utility room, (which is not many times a day as I don't want to disturb her and generally I am at work all day, but off at the minute as I work in a school) she wakes up and runs to the bars wanting to be fed, I have by rule been feeding her a teaspoon of food in the morning and one in the evening ( is this way too much?) (or not enough?) I am a very responsible pet owner and want to make sure I am doing everything right for Blodwynn but worry about her seeming to want food all the time? and her waking up in the daytime! Any help and advice would be gratefully received. ( Just to add i spot clean her cage every couple of days and have cleaned it fully twice since we got her, she has a big wheel various chew toys and a house)

Re: Syrian hamster waking when she hears us?
Hi DottyMum and welcome to HC. Congratulations on Blodwynn your hammy!
All hamsters like to store food in their cage, some have 2 or 3 places where they'll hoard food so this is normal. The recommended food dosage is 10 to 12 grams a day. Hamsters will wake up during the day to go to the toilet, eat and drink. Keep to your routine but, start giving her little pieces of vegetables.
In the colder weather they do tend to hoard more.

Congratulations on Bloswynn, that's a cute name! Was wondering what type of cage you have her in? Welcome to the forum!

Re: Syrian hamster waking when she hears us?
Hello dottymum! She sounds fine to me,as you settle down with each other you'll get to know her patterns and she yours. At the moment she associates you with good things, which is great! and bombs out to see you whenever she hears you. It's sweet! If you're just giving normal hamster food and bits of veg its unlikely she will overeat, too many treats aren't great though. That would be things like yoghurt drops and sunflower hearts... Fine in moderation. If you clean her out and you find stashes of mouldy food everywhere maybe give less or learn where her hoards are so you can keep them nice. Replace anything you remove, or a little of it if she has built a mountain! Make sure you only give tiny bits of fresh veg which will be completely eaten as mould builds up otherwise. Stick to a predictable feeding routtine, I used to feed my Syrian morning and evening and sneak in some fresh stuff when I spot cleaned her in the afternoon while she was still asleep so she found it when she woke. She would wake anywhere between 4 and 8 pm but did get up in the day to snack sometimes. She wasn't sociable at those times and just raided her bowl with her eyes shut and went back to her nest!
