Potty as bath ??
I haven't posted in a while so hi everyone ! I wanted to talk about Minnie's silly little instinct (is that the right word?) to use her potty as a bath (like mammies do with a sand bath ) . I'm not 100% sure she's using it as a bath but what she does is she goes in there and starts digging and grooming herself and shaking her fur like she did with her sand bath a few months back . In fact I find that she barely uses her sand bath now . Not even as a potty . She does everything in her potty and by the way in case you were wondering I use the potty litter by Kaytee . So my question is does the potty litter provide any qualities like a sand bath which helps the to get rid of oils in their fur and stuff like that . I will still live her potty in there as she likes it so much but I was just wondering ... And how often should I clean out her potty , I do it every three days but now that she uses it so much I was thinking I need to do it a bit more , so how often should I do it ? Thx for all the replies

Re: Potty as bath ??
I used to clean my hamsters toilet every day (remove wet part and add a little fresh). Don't wash it too much as the scent is needed to encourage them to continue using it.

Re: Potty as bath ??
It would be better to start putting sand in the potty maybe, instead of potty litter, if she is using it as an en-suite bathroom lol! Charlie does the same, so I gave up giving him a sandbath - he washes in the front part of the potty and pees in the back corner.

Re: Potty as bath ??
Mine both have big sand baths but they much prefer to take a bath in their potties! They take care not to roll in the pee though. They have different sand in each at the mo, potties have chinchilla sand (the selective science one) and the big baths have play sand in. They seem to much prefer the chinchilla sand.

Re: Potty as bath ??
Yes she has chinchilla sand too in her bath and some of you are saying to put the sand in her potty . So will I have to get rid of the other sand bath (like get rid of it completely )or will I just leave it in so she can just chill in there because if I were to take it out , there would be more room in her cage .And yes I leave some pee in there as I know that they need the scent to keep using it . I will probably keep both of them in there . Btw I said mammies instead of hammies in the first line so sorry about that . Stupid autocorrect !! XD

Re: Potty as bath ??
Gopal (syrian hamster) has a rabbit corner litter tray as a sand bath (chinchilla sand) he wees in it at the back and does a lot of rolling around in it at the front. I clean out the wee'd on sand every day.
I reakon it would be fine to just leave a big bowl full of sand for her to wee and bathe in.
