Squeaking
Hi guys
I normally keep Syrian hamsters and have just got my first pair of Russian Dwarfs (unsure whether they're Winter White's or Campbell's as Pets at Home are clueless ).
My question is, are they supposed to squeak quite a lot? I find that when President Coin goes into the same hidey hole and President Snow, President Snow starts squeaking. It doesn't last a long time and he quickly settles down and they DO still choose to sleep together, where they do have two of everything (including houses/hideyholes) if they wanted to be apart.
I think I might just be over-thinking it because I'm used to Syrian hamsters that are pretty much silent. What do you think?
Thanks,
xamybobsx

Re: Squeaking
Hi & welcome to the forum.
Congrats on your new hams, if they come from P@H they will be hybrids (campbells/WW cross), they can be quite vocal & may just be settling in & make more noise than normal as they explore & sort things out between themselves but they can still sleep together even after squabbling or more serious fights have begun so do keep a very close eye on them in case you need to separate them.

Re: Squeaking
Dwarf hamsters are more vocal than Syrians and often squeak while playing together, but keep an eye on them just in case because even littermates can start to fight as they get older- often out of the blue and seemingly for no reason- and will need to be separated immediately if this happens as, once they start, they will not get along again.
It is a good idea to get rid of any houses/ huts etc that only have one opening/ door as they will often become territorial over it and either block the other hamster from coming in, or trap it inside, which could be the reason they are squeaking.
For some reason, they can fight during the day and then cuddle together at night- very strange!
To avoid possible fighting you can have two of everything, make sure all houses have two doors, and make sure the cage is big enough (Pets At Home cages usually aren't- a good size for two dwarves could be an Alaska, which is £35 on Zooplus).
I hope this helps! X
