Default The acrobatic hammie

turbo can be very weird sometimes. the weirdest thing ive caught her doing is...wait I need to say my cage has wooden zigzagging platforms going up.(2). At the top of each is a little platform, witch is big enough for a hammie house, and room for her to walk on to get to the next platform, or to go down a platform. anyways her main den is the top hut, so to get down to his wheel,2nd and 3rdhouses,food,and water, she should climb down the "stairs" or climb the bars right? nope. she goes down to the first plat form, then leans off and falls, but she doesn't fall totally, she grips the platform with one back leg so she hangs like a bat-hamster,then falls after a few seconds. she also is currently trying to get to the top of her wheel by climbing bars and jumping. she lands and stays for a second when the wheel turns and she falls off. she does this all the time.

Oh heck, that sounds a little dangerous! I beg it's adorable to watch but you need to be careful she doesn't catch her back leg when she does that as it could lead to a fracture. And make sure her substrate is good and deep so she has a soft landing. What cage is she in?

I don't remember the name of the cage. It came in a purple box and was made for rats because when I was finaly able to find a 360 sq. inch cage it was for guinea pigs and we put her in and sheclimbed through the bars! so we put her in her old cage and that morning we went to Petco and found this one. she has plenty of bedding so she has a very soft landing. I wrote this post days ago and haven't seen her do it sense. She was probably just exploring because she did this the days after we got her the cage, now she just climbs, or uses the walkway. tonight I think ill do a hamster watch by sleeping next to her cage, so ill tell you if I see it or not.

Sounds like she's settling in fine. Some rat cages can be a bit tall but with the right set up, you can prevent any mishaps. There are great ideas on the show me your cages thread for inspiration. Am guessing you're US? I think finding good sized cages there can be a real pain.

Yeah I'm US. about 90% of pet stores don't know a thing about hamster care. And to top it off, most large cages aren't made for hamsters,so the bars of them are far apart, meaning hamsters escape.kinda sucks but turbo really digs her new cage. results of the hamster watch: she has started either climbing or actualy using the stair things. she climbs to get to the first platform because the first stair is pretty steep. but the second is just right. she no longer hangs, but I did spy her trying to get atop her wheel. don't worry, she has a soft landing. plenty of bedding there.

God stuff! If her stairs are a bit too steep, you can always use bendy bridges (you can get some long ones) instead. Or make an extra step from a smaller bendy bridge. But sounds like she's settling in fine

Thanks! It moves up and down, but wont stay. I might put a hut under it.but I almost don't want to because she has a blast sliding down it. It isn't realy stairs, its flat, but every inch there is a spot for her to grip. it is like taking a piece of cardboard and putting it slanted, and then cutting it in some for grips.
