Re: Please can someone advise?
Hello Millie, welcome to HC. She looks very sweet LouHam. She will settle down I am sure. It is just a lot of change and upheaval in a short time for her.

She's a funny little thing. I'm hoping with a little help she will have a lovely little life in her HH and that we will all become firm friends.

Re: Please can someone advise?
So, as it's been a week I thought I would update you! Milly seems to have forgiven me but I fear I have made a silly mistake! I put in a cosy pocket that I got as part of the bundle when I received the cage and she seems to have taken up residence in it. She's been rather clever and chewed through the seam and her food store is underneath the back of her pocket. I tried to get in to have a look just now because I feared she was weeing inside. I didn't manage to get a look in her abide but I did discover, and feel awful that I didn't notice before, that she has chosen a corner to wee in! I scooped it all out and put some wood shavings in the space and some shredded paper in as well. I've put a couple of extra things in tonight, a seesaw and a wooden chew thingy but her fave so far seems to be the paper! She comes up to me at the bars and has a chat etc and takes things from me. I'm still lacking some confidence with regards to handling her but I am going to make a big effort over the next few days and onward to properly tame her. Can anyone give me any advice on how often I need to fully take the cage apart and clean everything? Thanks in advance Lou xxx

Re: Please can someone advise?
If she's peeing in one spot you could put a litter tray with some sand there which makes spot cleaning easier, then you only need to check there's no fresh food or anything that might go off hidden away anywhere & only need to take the cage apart & clean once every month or even two, they really are very clean generally so don't need much work once you've figured out where they pee & hoard food.
When you do a clean don't take everything out, only remove about a third to half of the substrate (as little as possible basically) you can either take it from the top or just do half the cage at one time, keep back the rest of the substrate plus at least some of the nesting material & food hoard (you can replace the food hoard with some fresh mix if you prefer but put it in the same place as you found it!) that way the cage will stay smelling familiar & cleaning won't disturb her too much.
I would be very careful leaving any fabric or fleece in the cage with a syrian unless you can be totally sure they won't chew it & possibly ingest it.
