All you need is a piece of 1" square mesh - measure the size you need and ask the diy place to cut it to that size. And a normal stapler should do it, to staple it down - or you could buy little u tacks in the diy shop and hammer them in. Personally I would get the mesh the same size as the lid and attach the mesh to the inside of the lid or he may get out and get trapped under the mesh if it's on top. If it's the same size as the lid and on the inside the sharpish edges will be out of reach sitting on the rest parts.
