Question Pouching soiled bedding...

Hello fellow hamster people,

Last night I noticed my Syrian, Missy, pouching some of her soiled bedding and bringing it into her nest. Is that normal? I thought I'd heard of every somewhat icky thing hamsters do, but this is a new one for me.

I had just cleaned her cage (leaving 2/3 of her old bedding and most of her old nest) so I thought maybe she was redistributing her scent. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Sounds like she was rebuilding her nest with the bedding that smelled like her. Probably just so the new nest smelled familiar.

How often do you do a clean? Do you use a spray? Some of these cleaning sprays can leave a strong odour. Make sure the stuff you use is safe for small pets.

I agree with kelza in that she is trying to make her nest smell more familiar. Just make sure you aren't cleaning the cage with something with a very strong smell.

Thanks for the replies.

That makes sense that she was just making her nest smell familiar. She might do that every time but I have just never seen her do it. I never use any sprays on her tank. I just clean out her pee corner every couple days and do about 1/3 bedding change every month or so. She is very tidy so it really doesn't get too dirty in there.
