Default What is it like having a hamster cage(s) in your room?

This is kind if a random question but I am intrigued about how is it like having a hamster cage in your room?!
Surely they must be noisy and how do you get to sleep?

I used to keep hamsters in my room, up until I had three I think, nut I am a light sleeper and unlike some people, the sound of a wheel or bar chewing gets to me! So out they went, into their own rooms.

Last year when 'their room' was painted I moved them all into my room, so that the paint fumes wouldn't get to them...and well...I ended up sleeping in the spare room, due to no sleep with them.

It is very noisy to have a hamster in your room, I have kept my Syrian in my room for a bit, my room smelled a little bad. Syrians are really noisy at night, I think Dwarf hamsters and Chinese hamsters wake up at dawn or dusk so they are not as bad, but having a Syrian in your room could mean no sleep for you at all. If you're a heavysleeper, then maybe. You can try it for a few nights, see how it goes.

I was thinking it might be difficult to sleep!
XD
I guess it depends on how well you can get to sleep!

I actually sleep fine despite having all the pets in the bedroom... Somewhere down the line the room started to belong more to the pets than the humans but it works well really

The answer for me is that I find it nice having the pets around, we make sure we get quiet wheels and generally the pets aren't too noisy. If anyone starts bar chewing we stop them asap for their own sake so it doesn't have that long to interfere with our sleep before its stopped really. Its also reassuring when we've got a pair or group of dwarf hams as we know if they start to fight in the night theres a good chance we'll hear them and wake to stop it before things get worse.

Dolly is in my room during the day but I absolutely have to put her downstairs at night, she's so loud it's unreal! I can even hear her from downstairs!

I have to have Mulan in my room because I'm at uni. Honestly? It really doesn't bother me. She has a flying saucer which is very close to silent and she's so little and light she barely makes any noise at all. I find it quite comforting to have her there - especially when I come home from a long stint at the library or if I'm staying up late to do work. Even when she's just there when I'm getting ready for a night out - I love it!

My dad was with me this week for a night, as my spare room is my office/study, I have a sofa bed, which my dad uses. In the past, I have moved the fluffs out of the lounge into the study but it's still quite chilly in that room at this time of year and also, now that I have five cages to move (not introduced Elynor to you yet), there isn't enough room in the study, even if it was warm enough. So, I offered to let him have my room as it was just for a night (I'd struggle on the sofa for more than a night) but he insisted on having the sofa bed, which was a bit disappointing as I was looking forward to having all the red LED lights on throughout the night so I could watch them all if I wasn't sleeping.

Anyway, to get back to the point, he did use ear plugs but he said he wasn't disturbed. He could hear Fey on her saucer and so can I at times but then her saucer makes more noise because it is on glass. The only noise that disturbs me sometimes when I fall asleep on the sofa, is when any of them crash and bang their wooden toys around sometimes.

At least it seems that in the future, they can all remain in the lounge when my dad stays even when the spare room is warm enough as he can get a good night's sleep regardless of their activities.

I think it's going to be down to if you're a very light sleeper or not as well as your hamster. I have Spike's cage in my bedroom, literally right next to the bed and I have zero issues with him keeping me awake at night. Aside from the slight noise from him pottering about his cage, going on his wheel and having a chew on something he actually makes very little noise. However he does have a silent wheel and does not bar chew (well unless he's being naughty and wants attention but that's not often), I imagine if you didn't have a quiet wheel and had a hamster with bar chewing issues it would be a different story.

It would drive me nuts! My critters are in a critter room with the door shut upstairs, and we can hear them running downstairs every night. I cannot imagine sleeping in the same room.
