She says that the now alone bully is wondering where the other is so they are going to get him a smaller cage!!! Surely he'll just be getting over the shock of losing a roommate?

If he`s happy where he is there is no reason to put him in a smaller cage? What brand of cage are they both in now? Dwarf hamsters on their own still need at least 70cm x 45cm of floor space from a cage ideally. x

I dont know what type, she doesn't either. I'll tell her the cage dimensions and see what happens next.

He doesn't need a smaller cage. Nor will he mind being on his own. I'm very glad she separated them but where does she get these ideas???

Hamsters need plenty of room and it would be unfair to put one in a smaller cage while the other has the other cage all to himself.
Dwarfs especially like to burrow and run about, she can't punish the bully.
This should've been done ages ago.
HHG - I Hope you can persuade her to get the recommended sized cage.

So he doen't need to be moved? She says the cage is too big for him and he doesn't like all the space. To be honest I think all hams like big cages but I don't really know. Smudge (my hammy) loves all the space and runs around, jumping on everything, sitting on everything (he sits on his crinkle tunnel and is the surprised when he tries to go through and can't!)and climbing on everything!!! He loves to roam around and if I took that away from him, he would probably hate me!!!! So wouldn't it be cruel to take that away from the bully?

Does he have many toys or tunnels in his cage? It might be that he feels more exposed than before and is being extra cautious.

Did you ask her why she thinks that? Where is she getting this idea? If she has a behavior concern it would be great if she came on and asked the experienced people here about it directly. But thank you for filling in again!
What kind of cage is he in and what does he have in it to keep him busy? Oh ^ snap.

Sometimes they can be unsettled after a move to a new cage or extra space, but usually within a couple of weeks they are fine. I know Charlie seemed scared by all the extra space when we moved him to a bigger cage and would sit and shiver. Sometimes we were so worried we thought about moving him back to his smaller cage but decided to give it a wee bit longer and suddenly he turned the corner and was happy as larry. Maybe she could get him a flying saucer - that might distract him and he'd have some fun with it. Also she could scatter feed (hide bits of food around the cage) so he'll go looking for it and get used to his way round the cage.
