Default Hamster keeping

Why is it not ok to keep syrian hamsters in groups or pairs but dwarf and other types are ok in groups??

Is it ok to mix a syrian with a different type of hamster?

I have no intention of putting in another hamster i'm just curious???

Thanks

Default Re: Hamster keeping

Syrian hamsters are by nature solitary animals. In the wild they will have large territories and will not tolerate others near them. It is just the way they are. They will also tend to see another type of hamster as a threat and would be likely to either fight or flee.
I have seen, in france, a huge tank in a pet shop full of all breeds of hamsters syrians, russian, chinese. I doubt they cared if they fought or what but they were all snuggled up during the day. It seemed odd but they were babies and were likely not mature enough to know any better! I would never risk this myself.
