The very reason that forums like this exist is to share info and the fun stuff too. Every single one of us has had lots of questions. It's one of the best things about HC; the ability to get information...good information, in order to give our hams a good, healthy, and happy life. Don't apologize for it . Oh, and we all make mistakes too. I'd have to see a clearer photo of his back to be sure, but it could be the gland area, or he may have some long hair genes in him and is growing tufts there. He looks so sweet peering out of the bars.

He woke up today at 11.30pm. D:

I didn't handle him today, because I think he needs some personal time with his wheel. He recently just discovered the joy of sleeping and resting on it, haha! He rests for about a minute on the wheel (panting) after a few minutes of running on it though, this is fine, right? o: (He runs pretty fast, too, so maybe that's why he gets tired quickly? He never had a wheel in the pet shop I got him from.)

I can't take a picture of his back now, but it looks something like this, just not as thick. (credits to the owner!)

I was thinking of buying the Ikea Detolf for his new cage, but since I have a cat, I'd like his cage to be in my room, and the Detolf might be a tad too big. Any other Ikea suggestions besides the Detolf?

I've seen many ham owners panic over the 'he runs on his wheel and then 'passes out' cold ' worries.....Given how they attack those wheels, I find it kinda cute that they just have to collapse and snooze. The expression on Ziggy's face , after an outing and a run is priceless.....kinda like Snoopy with a 'sigh' caption over his head, nose drooed over his doghouse. Ziggy manages to find a tube, or the entrance to his wheel to drop his head out, and stare, exhausted.....If I didn't know better I'd think he was suddenly depressed. My guess is suddenly exhausted....still too cute for words.

Better he does the mopy face after running on the wheel. He also does it when he doesn't get out when he wants, which makes me uber guilty....and HE knows it!!!!! LOL

Like DrK said.....ask away. I almost asked last night if my Zigger was dying since he slept mucho, and his only lively time I could see was twenty minutes. He got all grumpy and morose when I tried to jazz him up with some activity or another outing. Day by day, these lil critters tend to keep me guessing, and like someone else said here, I get hypochondriac over it all. The slightest change in behavior!

I was truly prepared when I woke, and put food in the cage, to find out he died. His laziness was that profound yesterday. Never mind it was 70 percent humidity, in the upper nineties and I felt pretty much like he did!

He's fine, we made up for it today! He free ran, did his wheel, explored the bed, got obnoxiously cuddled (and physically checked over) , introduced to baby carrots, slept and came out again....! He even spent some time wandering around on a guitar.....he seems to like music. Cutest thing is to play something and look at the cage and find a rapt audience of one.

Needless to say, he is passed out, on the second level platform, like a dog in front of a fireplace.

In terms of progress? I just picked him up off the floor in mid free run of the room, and he barely cared.....taming is slow work. When I get in a mood, I tend to think all I do is feed the little piggy and open doors for him. I'm not even sure he cares if it's me or someone else doing it. When he comes to the cage door when I come home, I tend to think....ah, yes.....you want OUT! You wouldn't care if a CAT opened the cage door!

It's an amazing process, sharing your life with another critter. Not always easy, or fun....but sooo worth it. As the many stories here and elsewhere attest, taming is a process, and a key ingredient is time.

Good call, often, to let sleeping hammies lie. Like any other creature, these solitary beasties can decide to sleep in.....I'm sure your hammy appreciated it

Ooops, I heard a seed being dropped in the WHEEL. Another round? I'm too tired........no one said it would be easy, lol.............

We all worry about our hams <3 they love to make us worry.

Just last night I worked myself up to a minor panic because Margo's cheek was swollen, like she had something in her pouch, but she had it there most of the day which she never does.
I started worrying that something was stuck or impacted, or even that a tumor had sprouted suddenly...

Only to have her spit it out like five minutes later xD

Reminds me of how silly I felt days into being a hamster guardian when I reported that my hammy was going into his wheel and picking up seeds, and trying to place them up higher in the wheel, only to have them fall to the bottom.

Yup.

Didn't think of the possibilities that he was emptying his pouches in his sacred wheel......sigh....

The photo is of a long haired hammy. Some of them aren't long haired all over. Some get long tufts and others have really luxurious long fur all over.

That picture is adorable. Now I have "Oh da girls in France, do da hula hula dance!" playing over and over in my head

Hello hamsters, goodbye sanity? Sigh..........

Hamsters have personalities the same as people. I have had Mylo for 4 months and he is much shyer than other hamsters I have had, but he eventually warmed up. Using his ball as a retrieval method works great. Now when he sees it, he hops around and sometimes jumps in while the ball is still in the air. He knows treats and fun are instore.

Thanks for all the replies, guys! Gyu's settling in great (I was worried about nothing, haha!).

He stuffed 3 popcorn puffs in his pouch earlier (which I thought was very very cute) and went straight into his house, came out immediately after that without his chubby cheeks (sigh; if only we humans are like that!) xD

Today, I think, is a very meaningful day for me and Gyu. I finally feel like he trusts me enough to come out of the cage and into my hand a couple times earlier. He even ignored his wheel to come out. He didn't stop climbing the bars until I opened the cage. He's pretty much an attention seeker. You guys are right, they have their own personalities.

It sounds like things are going along very nicely. I am so glad Gyu's comfortable enough to want to come out to play. Good job.
