Re: Sparkle's last chance
Sparkle is coming on a treat. She is a busy little hamster and quite tidy about her cage.
Day 3 Sparkle is getting much more relaxed with me and today I didn't have to take the cage lid off as I could pick her up from the cage and just lift her out. We are progressing to hand to hand running and she is taking this well. She is still jumpy though and gets excited when she has been out a while so we still keep sessions short. I let her run on the bed a little and practiced the lift and lay routine. She is a lovely wee thing and I hope her family will be pleased when she goes home. They are having updates and keeping in touch.
Day 4 Today I decided to introduce another handler as Sparkle needs to get used to other people handling her. BigD was happy to oblige and duly did his stint with her. She did actually give him a minor tasting however he kept handling and she didn't harm him at all. I think she was just unsure on the new smell and person touching her.
Next I allowed her to climb on me and she seemed quite confident climbing on my shoulder. She is still very speedy when on the ground though and I'm hoping she will calm as she grows up and tames down as well
Sparkle says HI !!

Re: Sparkle's last chance
It always amazes me how people think taming happens just like that! Sparkle is still young and I think her first family may have really scared her. I'm really glad the second family knows you and were able to turn to you for help. This hamster would have been labled as a "biter" and maybe spent the rest of her life in a pet shop. She's lovely, really a beautiful little girl. With the right handling, just look at her! Great job Souffle I really like the way this thread shows taming step by step.

Re: Sparkle's last chance
I agree with DrKM! She is getting on so well! With a bit of patience and little fear though, things go so well. I think people assume they'll get a ham who won't bite...! I don't know why. I almost want to offer to help tame hamsters, since I don't mind getting nipped a few times.
This is a great thread with some amazing tips for owners! I'll definitely be using some ideas you've posted here once Cora is back. I love when my hamsters come to me, both dwarf boys and Java will.

Re: Sparkle's last chance
Wow, she's coming along quickly! I've had a couple over the years that took a long long time to be ok and not panicky with being picked up. One was when I was still a kid. I think she was about 6-7 months before she was really tame, but turned into a good hamster. The other was a male and he was always a bit jittery, even when he got old.
