I don't take out wheels unless the hamster has medical issues. If he's peeing in the wheel, he might just not want to get out and just keep running. My hamsters all do it occasionally. Personally I'd look into a trixie wheel, I believe they're the cheaper versions of wodent wheels in the UK. It might be a bit more of a blah to clean, but at least you can keep it clean.

Sorry to hear he's back at it! Gross - I keep thinking of that wee just flying around as he whizzes along, oblivious. Even worse with a long haired hamster. Wouldn't a flying saucer be a better option, as the wee won't drop down all over him?

We use the plastic trixie wheels and they're not that hard to clean, the front comes off and goes on really easily

Every time my hammy has peed in his wheel, I can trace it back to interfering with his habitat. But then again, he's kinda potty trained, so that makes a difference. If said rodent :P is spraying himself on the wheel o' pleasure, be assured they will also groom themselves before we can realize they are kinda pee soaked. I've reached a kind of happy balance with said rodent :P......I let him nest in his wheel as he likes, but when he's particularly active? I take out the shredded paper and seeds he has hidden....and he goes to town on the wheel as a running device. Soon after, he finds the litter and seeds RIGHT OUTSIDE his WHEEL where I left it? and he drags it all in to hunker down for the night. Repeat as needed. If I am too zealous or off his schedule, he might pee in it ....then run. Hmm, keep repeating, its HIS house, its HIS house......In MY house? I'd like to poo in the kitchen if I so desire. Just for the record, if I lived in his cage, the wheel totally rocks as a place to chill, sleep, nibble on my stash and avoid the sight of ugly humanoids ? heh.........

Whatever it is, it's unlikely I'll be able to get him to stop
The silent spinner is fine for now, and I guess he's fine on that until I get round to ordering some plastikote and a new Karlie. The wodent wheels are really nice I have to say, so I might ditch ordering a Karlie and get the maroon and black wodent wheel instead as it still matches quite nicely with the Alaska colours, and is easy to clean. Thank you all very much for your advice
