Robo dwarf hammy climbing on the roof?
Hey everyone (:
I've posted some threads about my Robo dwarf, Snowy, that I adopted 4 days ago. She's still very shy and scared so I'm taking my time with her. I'm also yet to upload pics due to the photo website I use being down, but I will upload some soon!
Anyway, her cage is plastic as she is so small I didn't want to risk her squeezing out the bars, but the very top of the cage has metal bars that you open and close to get her in/out and put stuff in/out. On this metal bar I have a long fruit stick hanging for her to chew on, I noticed her climbing on it the other day and chewing as she went along but today I walked into my room and noticed her actually climbing and walking along the roof of the cage. I was really worried as I haven't yet touched her and was scared she'd fall and hurt herself. She tried getting off and was hanging by one foot then eventuay dropped. Then she ran off into her nest.
Is this normal? Is she trying to escape? Or just having abit of fun? And should I move the fruit stick incase it happens again and she gets hurt? Or will she be fine? Sorry for all the questions I'm just really worried!
Thanks a lot in advance (:

Re: Robo dwarf hammy climbing on the roof?
As long as she's got a soft landing - ie lots of substrate, she'll be fine and yes, it's perfectly normal. It's a good sign actually - she must feel settled enough to climb about like that!
I had a robo climbed the bars of his cage, often going along the roof of it. He even worked out where the door to the cage was and would go to it whenever he was climbing when there was someone in the room with him lol.

LOLOLOL. There is actually a name for that walking on the roof bit, especially with two paws...monkeybarring. Most hamsters will try it in a barred cage.

Could you or would you want to add a hammock?

Oh good glad it's normal! Haha
I rearranged her cage today so that if she falls she should be just fine, saw her doing it again today and she's really quick it's so cute to watch!
She did that monkey barring that you mentioned Dr KMcK!
She's such a funny little hammy, obviously Robos are born climbers (:
