Default "Who stole my poo??" Spot cleaning the nest.

How do you spot clean your hamster's bedding or nest to minimise stress?

My new roborovski hamster pees and poos in the little plastic house where she usually sleeps. I know that this is normal behaviour for hamsters, especially young ones (mine is probably eight weeks old), but what is the best way to deal with it?

Her nest material (plain white toilet tissue) is dry but stinks of urine so ideally I'd like to clear some of it out and to discard her tidy little collection of poos and seed husks when I spot clean the rest of her cage. The two times I've cleaned her little house she's been understandably stressed by it. Seeing her reaction really breaks my heart.

I guess my questions are:
  • How often do you spot clean or replace your hamster's nest material? I spot clean her sandbath, toys and other accessible areas of the cage every evening.
  • If cleaning is stressful for your hamster, how long can you leave dirty nest material and substrate?
  • Is having all this hamster feces and urine around safe for humans? I keep my hamster's cage in an open-plan kitchen/dining/living room.
  • Will a hamster eventually throw dirty bedding and rubbish out of its the nest by itself? She does sometimes kick nest material out - I'm not sure if that's because she thinks it's dirty or whether it's because she just doesn't want that much in her house.

When I did some searching on the forum about this topic, someone suggested clearing out all the soiled bedding and waste from the hamster's sleeping quarters every day and replacing with fresh bedding and new dry food. This is supposed to keep her home clean but make her feel more secure because her food hasn't been stolen. Everyday seems a bit excessive but in general does that sound alright?

I decided to put a teaspoon of millet and seeds from her dwarf hamster mix into the house with another handful of Carefresh to see if that would entice her back. And, sure enough, it did. She's crazy about those little seeds!

I'm hoping the Carefresh will absorb the odours better than toilet tissue so I won't feel tempted to clean her nest for a while.

Personally I would suggest removing the little house and instead using something like a log bridge or a cardboard box with the whole bottom cut out and holes punched in the top. The houses are poorly ventilated and they build up condensation which makes it smell bad and drips on the hamster making it damp and smelly.
I would give her some tissue as they need this to build proper nests with. Just carefresh is a bit hard. With plenty ventilation and an open nest she will soon freshen up.
Don't clean every day as they pee more to replace the scent and it is very stressful. We leave as long as possible till the bedding looks tired and loses its spring.

Only replace at full cage cleans usually around 4-6 weeks. We give extra as it flattens. Spot clear wet area every two days and the rest should be fine.

There is a thread somewhere on how long between cleans and generally people are between 3-6 weeks epending on cage size, substrate depth, species and other factors.

The hard black poo is smell free and inoffensive. Hamsters are desert animals and they draw most of the water out the poo before it is passed. You ca pick it out and dispose if you prefer but we have never found this is needed as it doesn't smell and has never harmed anyone I know of. The wet corner needs the litter removed and we spray with a pet safe stray and then wipe with kitchen roll to dry and replace fresh litter every couple of days. If they use a potty all the better and we use chinchilla SAND and throw this out, wash the potty and replace with clean.

If they don't find if offensive they won't throw it out unless they have too much in there to be comfy. Sometimes they move the whole lot to a new location. We offer fresh stuff when it looks a bit flat to build in to the nest. We always put a little food in the store area after cleaning and also replace a bit of the old bedding to keep the scent and this does help them settle after a clean.
Your hammy should not smell of wee though if the nest is well ventilated though babies sometimes take a while to set up a routine and a potty area.
Hamsters are clean, fastidious little creatures and should pose no health risks to you or your family

Thank you, souffle! This is great practical advice. I've never had a pet before, let alone a hamster, so your tips and support are really appreciated.

I haven't found any damp areas in the cage yet. She only pees a tiny amount so I expect any urine has dried out.

I have one of those bendy wooden bridges so I'll swap it with the plastic house next time I refresh the substrate and do some tidying. Hopefully the change won't scare her too much.

If you get one of those jars and toilet train your hamster he should pee in his toilet but about poo they just go whenever and wherever
I personally spot clean every 3 -4 days winter time and 2 days summer time. Full cage clean is every month even then I'll leave plenty of old bedding and nesting materials as I don't want to stress my hamster out.
I'd say hamster poo and pee is pretty safe as so far I and my family members had no problems I even let my hamster run on my kitchen work top while having morning coffee (well supervised from both sides!!!)
I'd say your hamster will not throw out his dirty bedding but he sure will chuck out his poo they are very good throwing away their poo but their pee is more of problem as could lead to bacteria and fungal infection maybe ?!

Thanks, Tutu. I wish I could let my hamster run around but as she's a robo I'm pretty sure I'd never catch her!

I've seen her pee in her wheel which suits me fine because it's easy to wipe off. And she does have a sand bath permanently in the cage that she has been known to poo in.

As souffle suggested, she's probably taking time to establish a routine and a toilet area.

You may try putting a little sand box into her cage. My Syrian, tripod, always pees in her sand box as did my late dwarf Romy ( though he bathed in it also) so yours may develop the habit too. However my new baby dwarf Rosie prefers to sleep in it for some reason even though she has got a bed with loads of bedding. I use unprinted paper sheets for the bottom of my cage, much cheaper and easy to clean. I just put the house and bedding one side and change the paper then but it back in again. I personally find unprinted paper cheaper, cleaner and unlike other beddings cannot cause resperitory problems.
