Was I lucky to get a calm dwarf?!
I've been wanting to get a dwarf for ages and reading all the threads about them I was fully prepared for a look-only pet who was wildly hyperactive and possibly even cage aggressive. Roxanne is busy for sure but she loves to interact. If I put my hand in her ZZ she runs over and jumps on to be taken out! Should I just sit back and enjoy my luck or be concerned that there's something wrong with her

I've had 3 hybrids and 2 of them have been the soppiest friendly little creatures. The 3rd is friendly and nosy but won't sit for cuddles as he's too busy exploring

Re: Was I lucky to get a calm dwarf?!
My hybrid Snowflake was very calm and laid back. The vet even commented that she was one of the sweetest hamsters that they had ever met. She did come to me at a year old though so may have been different in her younger days
My robo is quite a busy wee thing but not manic or hyper. If you try and touch her then she will run away but she isn't aggressive at all. She is happy for me to potter about in her cage and she will take food from my hand but that's her limit.
On the flip side, we just adopted another little hybrid today who appears to be all kinds of crazy Hopefully she will settle a bit once the excitement of her new cage wears off!

I raise Campbell's, and it really depends on who raises them. My babies are held every day from 13 days old, so they're good around people. Some petstore hams are nice, but naturally crazy. Some petstore hams haven't been held, so they act crazy, even if they're really just scared.I wouldn't worry about it, just be on the lookout for anything suspicious!

Re: Was I lucky to get a calm dwarf?!
I find myself lucky with my little Todd. I've never known a more placid, affectionate and clever ham. My family think I have this boy trained, because when I let him out so he can free roam around the room, if I call him he comes running back to me and hops in my hand. He comes and climbs up on my knee to see what I'm doing, and comes and sits in my hand. He loves a snuggle, and comes dashing out of bed at the sound of my voice. He never bites, but he does lick. its so cute when he does that, he's got the softest little nose.
But my other two hybrids were hyper, cage aggressive and unpredictable. Lol. I think there's no way to label hybrids, each one is different.

Re: Was I lucky to get a calm dwarf?!
Every single hamster is different to a certain extent and has its own unique personalities and traits. You only need to be worried, if your hamster has any problems with its skin, growths, hair loss etc, if they have diarrhea or they stop eating and drinking. There are obviously other problems, but as you have only recently had the hamster, its too early for you too know its personality. Once you know their personality, and they start acting weird, then take a cause for concern. But I am sure he is fine

Our hybrid, Aisling, was so friendly it was alarming, she was just a pancake really. I really think dwarf hams get a bad rap, especially here in Canada, and it's very unfortunate. Enjoy your cuddly ball of fluff

Interesting, I never thought of it from that angle! I suppose the perception could change once they're better known, they do seem to be fairly new here! And I am thoroughly enjoying her antics. She's an absolute whizz on her wheel, digs amazing tunnels, and I'm discovering her likes and dislikes (sunflower seeds are awesome, peanuts not so much) and she seems to be enjoying her new surroundings as well
