Default peeing in house

I've read on here that the houses that come with the mini duna aren't good for hammies.
This I have learned first hand. Larry (chinese ham) is very timid, he doesn't come out until we've gone to bed (I can see things have been disturbed in his tank so it's a give away he's been out)

I decided to get rid of the little house, and since he wouldn't come out I removed the lid.
He was in the very back, and the house was swimming with urine. He has been weeing and pooing in there and the smell was awful.

He's now inside the igloo I made, but what are the chances of him weeing in there instead of coming out to do it?

The igloo has three separate entrances so I'm hoping he'll feel safer not having to just come out one way.

Unfortunately if he does like urinating in his house he may well do the same in the new one, could I suggest a house without a floor so his urine still goes into the cage substrate?

The house I made has no floor, so I can easily clean the substrate underneath.

Hopefully he'll be happier in this one.

Hi traste. Chinese hamsters (or indeed any hamster) prefer to have a sleepling place without a solid floor as it allows the hamster to dig underneath and make a natural nest. The house (or up-turned tea box!) is best placed on the ground floor and not on a shelf as the hamster can`t dig downwards on a solid shelf.

Sounds like you have made the correct adjustment now though.

Well i guess you cant stop him from peeing in there maybe put some of your sawdust of whatever you use to soak it up a bit. Carefresh is good for that my hamster does it sometimes i put a bit of carefresh in and it soaks the pee up a bit!
