Nesting in Wheel
I am a new hamster owner and have just completed the first cage cleaning for my hamster, Cashew. Immediately after I cleaned his entire crate he abandoned his nest and began storing his food and bedding in his wheel. Upon doing research I know he is doing this because I unintentionally destroyed his nest. It is an issue because he tends to scare himself in the wheel when the food falls as he starts to walk and jumps hugely around. I am concerned he will hurt himself and that he can't get the proper exercise.
How do I curb his behavior to a safer nesting location? I already tried disturbing the wheel nest in the hopes that he would move to a new location, but he has since returned to it. My next thought is to remove the wheel for a portion of the day time, when he normally sleeps and does not use the wheel, effectively "forcing" him to pick a new nest so he can go to sleep for the day, but I am concerned about stressing him.
Please help.

Re: Nesting in Wheel
I am not sure about how to get him to move his nest but I know the first couple times I changed my hamsters cage he got really scared. He would not go into his house where he was nesting at all. Eventually he calmed down and after a few weeks he has started going back in his house and nesting. Smokey is an extremely nervous hamster so I think if he can get over it in a couple of weeks most hamsters will. It was very nerve racking to me to because I could tell he was upset that I had ruined his hiding spots and I didn't want him to be traumatized but like I said he eventually calmed down. Hopefully yours will too and will soon go back to his usual spots.

Re: Nesting in Wheel
It's quite normal for them to make a nest in their wheel after a cage clean. I wouldn't disturb his new nest because that's where he feels safe. I'm guessing it's the noise of the food rattling that scares your hamster. He will eventually get used to it even though it is awful to see him jump every time. But they get used to noise gradually. Eventually he will realise it's better to sleep in a proper nest and he'd move.
My hamster does the same but he doesn't seem to be deterred that he has a food store and nest in his wheel when he runs in it. The food and substrate goes everywhere!
May be next cage clean don't change too much of the bedding . Lift the nest if you can (it should be easier to do this if you use a lot of tissue paper as bedding) and clean the bottom of the cage and gentle place the nest back.

Re: Nesting in Wheel
Dont worry its fine , Over time your hamster will find another nest, also maybe try putting in loads of different hidey holes for him, so he can sleep there

Re: Nesting in Wheel
Hi, New to this forum.
My little Tink Tink just started as nests in her wheel 3 days ago. I emptied it and in the morning it's there again. I bought her a new ladder and put in in there. She has a 3 level "condo" I built her when I got her so it isn't from lack of room to nest. I'm going to try taking it back out and see what happens??
