Default worried about hamster jumping, PLEASE HELP!

My hamster is around 1 year and 1 month old now. I have had him since he was 8 weeks old. When I first got him, I tamed him using gloves since he was and still is my first hamster and I was quite nervous. I only became confident enough to hold him without gloves in November 2012 (he was around 8 months old) He is very tame and took to being handled without gloves almost instantly. He has been fine ever since then and my confidence holding him has grown. But today, my mum took him out of his cage as she normally does every evening and he jumped out of her hands on to the top of his cage. She tried to pick him up again but he wriggled too much and he fell down behind his cage and got stuck between the wall and my chest of drawers (where his cage sits) I did manage to pick him and get him back in his cage. He seems fine and I put him in his ball to check if he was limping but he wasn't. He just ran like he normally did. This is a total behavioural change for him and I feel dreadful about what happened. This has really dented my confidence that took me so long to gain. Any ideas why he did this? And any tips for my confidence?

Some hamsters have a tendency to get that "act like a lemming" feeling while out of the cage. Darwin, my syrian, as tame as he is, gets antsy being held & he wants to run & play. He's tried to take an unexpected, flying leap out my hands a few times (one time jumping almost 4 feet to the floor...he was just fine). I'm not an expert by any means, but I think this isn't anything out of the ordinary.

I'd continue to keep an eye on him just on case, but I'm glad to hear that he seems to be doing well

I'd say it was probably that your mum may have smelt differently or something in the room? Hamsters depend heavily on there sense of smell.
