Exclamation Hissing/chirping noise HELP!!!

I just got a Djungarian hamster today. I had a hamster before but he died. i got him around 4 p.m. Now its almost 11 p.m. and he keeps making the same noise. He seems really stressed out and is breathing extremely hard. Every time I check up on him I hear him making a chirping noise, it almost sounds like a cat hissing. I also noticed that he hasn't eaten or drank anything since he came home. I don't see any droppings either. I'm really worried about him. Is this a phase of coming into a new environment or is there something else wrong?

Have you just brought him home? Could be he's just very frightened. Put his cage in a dark room and just leave him be for a bit. He'll find the food and drink when he needs to.

Minnie did that when she first came home... it's what I call 'the hamster war cry' and it means they're really frightened. Leave him somewhere dark, calm and quiet for a bit, and he'll soon find the food and drink.

We had to bring Monty to the family home when my daughter moved back home. He made similar distressing noises. We gave him a nice juicy grape - full of water and sweet - it was a treat - he occupied himself with it for about 10 minutes, and went to sleep. And was okay after that. Give your little one time and space - leave some nice treats in the cage and walk away. He will come around.

Thank you everyone! He is still acting the same way and i'm even more worried about him. But he is starting to eat and drink so hopefully he'll come around. Do you guys maybe think the stress is because he is alone in his cage? In the pet store he was with another hamster and he was behaving fine. I wouldn't mind getting another hamster if that's the problem.

is he a syrian if he is defo NO. he could be scared tell me when he does it and I might get a better idear if it is when you are near pass by the cage it is fear or could be cage rage. sound more like fear as long as he isnt in pain.

I would just like to add and I know many will dissagree if it is fear in my opion it isnt the best option to place the cage in a room of its own which is quiet as this can be more stressful for the hammy when you enter the room or if there is any noise near by. I would put the cage in the room it belongs or a room which is used but I would put the cage where it isnt going to be knocked or pass by but where it can hear what is going on and gets used to every day noise.
