Need help taming hamster?
Help guys, I need some help taming my syrian, fudge. So, things had been going good. After I left him for a few days and let him sniff my hand a couple of times a day, he was soon taking treats from my hand, and I could stroke him. I even got him on my hands when he stepped out of his ball. But yesterday, after I cleaned his cage, he seemed a bit skittish. Nonetheless, I let him is his ball and have a run around. But this time, he refused to climb on my hand when getting out of his ball. So he declined, and I accepted this. However, when he was waking up in the later evening, I called his name. He emerged slowly, and about two seconds later, he dived from one corner of the ferplast mary to the other (80cm) in a literal second. He raced up his bars and stood still there for a few minutes. Then later still, I was doing a small spot clean, and had the side door of the cage open. I offered him his favourite treat through the bars, he froze and declined. So I just dropped it in there and he darted faster than a robo out the door! Luckily, I managed to pull out a storage box so he never fell on the floor. Now, when I come in the room, he just stops his exploring and stares at me with one paw up. Help!!!

Re: Need help taming hamster?
by doing a full clean you have removed his scent and this has scared him also by dropping him its made it worse. Start at the begining again, do just spot changes or half a cage clean. in a few days he should be ok.

Thanks, he seems better now. Still not exactly how he was but near enough Next time I won't fully clean his cage, just the dirty bits.
And I didn't drop him, I dropped the treat into the cage through the bars!

r ok pleased he is getting back to normal now, would love to see picture. If you do need to do a full cage clean in the future if you dont wipe the toys it is ok to do ov if its really dirty it will need doing, by leaving scent on things the hammy realise where it is.

I'm pleased too, he's not so freaked out now! I didn't clean any of his toys either as none were really dirty. Here's a few pictures of fudge

Re: Need help taming hamster?
He is a lovely little man Sometimes when they sit with one paw up they are just waiting to see what you will do next, or are just curious about a noise. My boy Claude does it all the time and he's very tame!
