Re: Getting confused - to handle or not to handle?
When I checked this morning, he was no where to be seen. There are no signs of escape so I assume he has gone into his house. I am soooo tempted to look but will not let myself, as I know I need to leave him be.
Do they your hamsters make brief appearances during the day or do they stay tucked up til the evening? I would feel much more reassured if he came out for a wee or something!

If it will put your mind at rest then one peek won't hurt if you're really worried. It's just continuously doing it that can get a bit upsetting for them.
If I've been out somewhere and come back Fudge will sometimes come out to say hello although not so much since the weather turned horrible. Some hams come out during the day though

Re: Getting confused - to handle or not to handle?
I am going to resist as he is still learning to trust me (it is sooo hard). I *think* he is in the big corner house that comes with the Barney cage. I wedged the house down quite far so it is half filled with Fitch (nice and snuggly). So really, if I do take a peek, I'll probably cause havoc!
(I've just been looking at the pics of your Fudge - very cute. Mine is long haired too, but short long haired if that makes sense!).

Is he a breeder hamster then? He sounds very tame, letting you cuddle him on the first night!
Hopefully your daughter will absolutely love him and want to spend lots of time with him

And he probably has just gone into the house
Don't worry about him too much, I know it's really hard, but being a new hamster mummy can be really stressful as you learn what's normal and what's not for your little hamster!

Still no sign of him!
I got him from a lady who was breeding hamsters, yes. They were all really tame as she as been handling them everyday.
Yes it is very stressful being a new hamster mummy!

Re: Getting confused - to handle or not to handle?
At last! He came out of his den when I changed the water and topped up his food. I also gave him millet which he loved! I took some photos of him too! I will try to upload them later.
He also came out for a cuddle. He is really tame and lovely and calm. So sweet!
I am in love
