Eww xD
Fudge has always stored her food in her nest, well away from her litter tray (which is on the level below) Anyway, I woke up this morning and she'd dumped a load of food in the corner of her litter tray where she pees.
I just got back from work and she came to say hello then looked at me and pouched all the (presumably now gross) food and took it back to her nest.
Is she okay doing it?
It won't make her ill or anything will it?
It's just weird that I've had her for nearly 2 months and she's only just now started doing it

Re: Eww xD
I find hamsters do this more if the cage is being cleaned to often or if you remove the bad food from where they store it you should replace it with a little fresh food. they pee on food to mark it as there's and warn who ever is disturbing there food store away

Re: Eww xD
Ah right. Her cage has 4 levels. I do 2 one week and 2 the next so really its every fortnight. But when I cleaned her nest last I did forget to replace her food in there :/

Re: Eww xD
Perhaps just replacing the food will solve the problem then i used to have to do this with carmine he was very protective of his food store and threw a hissy fit if i clean out and don't replace it, but now he knows i feel the bowl up everyday he has calmed down

Oh I didn't know you were supposed to replace the store?? I never have ... But mind you she doesn't store very much as she eats all of Silver's mix!

Re: Eww xD
I don't think it necessary for all hamsters i have only had 2 out of 5 hamsters that would pee on there food so i just did it for them 2 as it reduces the stress to. I think as you have only had her for nearly 2 months she hasn't come to realise just yet that there will always be food there for her so she feels the need to protect it they are silly

Re: Eww xD
Returning the store depends on whether it's gotten damp in their beds etc, but I there's nothing wrong with it, it's just a waste throwing it away.
My Syrian is really grumpy with her food. She insists on running around her flying saucer with a dog biscuit rattling along in the middle of the night, but if I move it she takes it to her toilet. Then we play musical dog biscuit - every time I move it, she either bashes it around the cage and puts it in her toilet or runs around her wheel with it >.<

Re: Eww xD
Thank you both
Haha that sounds so cute Fudge always pouches hers whole. The first time she pouched a milk bone I freaked out because of how big it was xD
I know it doesn't hurt them but I always break the milk bone in half before i give it to her now. She's never put them in her toilet though
