Default Can you potty train hamsters?

I've had my hamster for about 6 months now, and he poops and pees on me when I hold him... is there any way I can stop this? Thanks!

Does he do it straight away? Or after he's been out a while?

Well, if I get him out when he's sleepy, he'll normally sleep in my hand for a while first, before slowly getting more active (you can watch his ears go up ^_^ ) and then he'll start to poop :/ and if you have him out for about 10 minutes he;ll pee on you.

But if you get him out when he's wide awake, like at night, he doesn't really do it at all, so I think it might be that if he's asleep, its all getting stored up inside of him, and as he wakes up he becomes active enough to have the energy to poop (sorry to be gross :P ) and I guess if he's active then he's going to the loo regularly and is less likely to need to go on me...

Well no wonder he's doing it You don't give him chance to go to the toilet before he comes out.

Let him wake up, go to the toilet, have a drink, have something to eat etc before you get him out.

Oh! That seems stupidly obvious now that I think about it Thankyou! Ill do that. I guess I like holding him when he first wakes up because he sleeps on my hand, but if it stops him going to the loo on my hand then ill let him have some time to wake up first! thanks again ;D xx
