Re: Aggressive hamster, can't tame him
I don't know if this works or not, but google the tissue paper method for taming hamsters. I'm going to try it with my next hamsters.

Does he bite outside of the cage? If he only bites you when he's in the cage, it's probably cage aggression, which I'm not sure there is a "cure" for.

Re: Aggressive hamster, can't tame him
My Clara Jane bites. I got her Sept., 2011, and she loves to attack and bite. It is just what she does. We can pick her up with the glove or cup and stroke her on her back, if we keep our fingers away from the mouth. LOL
I bring her out to play in the living room, and when she is ready to go back to her cage, she gets into the cup, and if to say, "Let's go". But she will still bite if you put your hand near her, in or out. I think it's a game with her.
If you try to empty her sand dish, or change her food dish, she will come out of hiding and pounce on the "hand". Have to get it with a glove. We love her to death! She has such vitality, and is fun - standing up looking for the next victim.

Re: Aggressive hamster, can't tame him
Hello all.. I would like to post an update here! It seems that the progress went very good. I can now scoop him with the gloves (he is a bit scared but not that much) and take him out of him cage. I kept him on my hands for like 2-3 minutes, he climbed my whole hand, etc . He nipped me only 2 times these 3 minutes and I guess it was because he wanted to return to his cage.
All these days that passed, I spent at least an hour a night giving him treats from my hand and speaking to him softly. Now, when I am near his cage and I speak to him, he comes to me and climbs the cage to get treats . I will continue all the progress till I can have him on my hands for more minutes and without bites or fear.
I would like to thank you all guys for your support and advices! I never thought I would make him more comfortable with me. Thank you!

Re: Aggressive hamster, can't tame him
Im so happy to hear your news. Hammy was like your hamster. She was a hamster which her lovely things to do was two things: "Biting" and "Bar chewing". well, statistics shows that 5% of hamsters cant be tamed not to bite any more and hammy is in that group.
I have talked to my vet, and result was nothing. I got help from helpful members of this site like you, and she became better. but she was still chewing and biting.
It was time to do some thing for me. I talked to my psychiatrist and tried to get help from her. first thing we should notice is that: "Why a hamster bite??"
If you can find the answer you can solve the problem, because you have a clue in your mind. I will share my experiences I had with you I think it can help you to have even long time cuddles.

Re: Aggressive hamster, can't tame him
well, now I have checked and seen that your cute hamster is a winter white DWARF which is a hard to tame hamster. Biting and such stuffs are their nature and nurture can make it worth.
I will try to write my experiences in a news post soon.
wish good times with your hamster.
