Default Reading my hamster, need some advice

This is the third week of hamster taming, but I just don't get that many opportunities to handle him, cause he rarely comes out or toward me (hard to reach inside this cage.)

He never hisses or bites, and once I have him in my hands, he seems a little fidgety but by no means really scared, after a few minutes he can even eat a treat in my lap. When I put him back, he doesn't immediately run away, so all signs point to him being quite comfy around me.

The strange thing is that after handling him like that, he does tend to hide for a very long time, and he never really warms up to it. He avoids hands and is very skeptical even of accepting treats.

So no bad behavior, no fear or aggression, comfy while being handled, but still very antisocial. What should I make of this?

Should I force the handling at least daily? Try to pick him up even if he doesn't like it? Should I just keep offering him treats daily from my hand? Or?

Dont fret! The more you do it the more he will get used to it. All hamsters are different, some are practically tame straight away, some will take a little more time. It sounds like you are doing a fab job

Hamsters are fidgets and will very rarely stay still in you hands on on your lap for long, even with the bribe or a tasty treat!

I have had Phoebe for nearly 2 years and she is such a tame hammy, never bites and will put up with all manner of kisses and forced cuddles and smooshing from me, but she still avoids hands if she can, she would rather step onto the back of a hand or an arm, and refuses to sit still, but thats just her! Other things, like funny noises and nice smells are much more interesting than I am!

After she has been handled she will often take her self off in to a corner of her cage and have a really good wash and groom for about 20-30 minutes. I always joke that she is getting rid of that 'horrid human smell'! So I am sure that yours is just doing something similar.

Just keep going with the taming and try and get into a routine, around the same time every day if you can, and you will find that hammy is waiting for you and will know that its 'out' time. It takes a little while to build up a firm friendship, but it sounds like you both are well on your way
