Default questions on hammies!!!

ok, im new to this whole hamster thing, ive asked the pet shop and read online..but er..i still cant figure these out

1. i got my hamsters today and they've been sleeping the whole day (and i know they're nocturnal) but now its 9:28PM here..and they're STILL sleeping, why? arent they supposed to get up around now? is it because of the different homes and stuff? or is it because ive been playing with them so much that they're tired?

2. ive been playing with them quite a lot (lol i love hammies) and my hands don't smell like food...but whenever i put just ONE finger there, one of them uses his paws to hold my finger and starts to bite it......why does he do this? (2 hamsters do this) erm, usually they dont bite when i take them out of the cage, but when they are inside..they are like a whole diff. hamster Oo why why?

3. the flooring is some kind of thing to kill the bacteria in their pee or something..and make it "smell-free" my hamsters arent eating their usual food..but biting on the flooring thing.. (one of them stuffs their cheeks with it!!) why is this so? i called the pet shop keeper and he says that they are just full (they are only 3weeks old) HELP!!

edit// 4. i have 2 hamsters...both brothers because they grew up together...they now live together in 1 cage....ive just noticed them fighting a little here a little there... (like i hear the squeaks) is it normal?

-ok. A LOT of questions here..but help a little im new to hamsters but i love them so much

I am going to try and answer your questions best I can. Firstly we need to know the type of hamster you have as this is important with regard to the living together bit. Sometimes pet shops are not sure about the types and give out wrong info so do you have any pics we can see.

1. It is quite normal for hamster to sleep all day, especially babies who, like babies of all species, require a lot of sleep to grow up healthy. You should try and avoid waking them up during the day a lot just now. They need their sleep and the constant strange scents of you in the cage will be unsettling for them. Our hamsters do not get up until around 11pm in the summer and that is pretty normal really. Once your hamsters are fully tamed you can wake them up at a time when it is suitable for you to play with them. That is not to say you should not start your taming quite soon but they will need aa few days to settle in first.

2. Dwarf hamsters very commonly suffer from 'cage aggression' or 'cage rage' as we call it! They do not like someone touching or poking their hands around in their territory, and will defend it by biting. Yours are very young to have developed this. At 3 weeks they really should not be away from their mother, so it is more likely they are simply just very afraid. Can you imagin something the size of a large bed coming down and trying to grab you? Scary, eh? Use the tips in the 'Taming Tips' article suggested by Pophammy in your introduction post and do not lift them from the cage. Instead either herd them into a box or hamster ball or a toilet roll tube to remove them from the cage. Take them to a large soft flat surface such as a bed before letting them out,and keep them low, so that if they do jump out of fright they will not have far to fall and will have a soft landing.

3. I am not sure what type of flooring/bedding you are using. Is it the lemon or lavendar scented wood shavings, or is it the carefresh papery stuff? Here is a link to different bedding types and which ones are safe to use: http://www.hamstercentral.com/user.php? ... ticle&a=58 . It is perfectly normal for hamsters to chew and pouch (stuff into their cheeks) sawdust and bedding. They do this to make it softer and more comfy and to transport it to their nesting area. I am sure they are eating their food during the night, and remember, a baby hamster will only comsume a very small amount. You should suplement baby hamster's food with tiny pieces of protein like chicken, cheese or scrambled egg, and small bits of fruit and veg. ( but not citrus) but only off one tiny piece every couple of days so as not to upset their tummies. Avoid sugary treats as Dwarves are prone to diabetes.

4. Hamsters, especialy babies, squabble and fight a lot to assert their dominane over their siblings. They often tumble each other over onto their backs, and squawk and shriek. As long as they settle down again afterwards, and do not draw blood, or one bullies the other so it becomes depressed, you should persevere with keeping them together, but if necessary you will have to separate them, but be sure to follow the rules of keeping their scent in the cage as I described in your introductory post.

Hope this helps, ask anything else you need to know and be sure to read the several useful articles in the articles section.

1.You just got them. They are getting use to their surroundings. Don't expect their sleep pattern to get normal for a few days if not longer.

2. You said you just got them today? Then leave them alone. They need to get use to their surroundings and to settle in. The biting in cage but not out is cage aggression. Dwarfs do this a lot. Plus just don't stick your finger at your hamster.

3. Don't use whatever that stuff is... just use regular bedding. Just because you haven't noticed them eat doesn't mean they aren't.

4. Make sure to have two wheels. Be sure to have two dishes or a big one that they both can fit in. What kind of cage do you have? You should have a 20 gallon long aquarium as a minimum. A big open space is best. They could be just fighting for dominance, or one of these other things could be causing an issue.

Sorry lilgurl I missed a c it is meant to be dominance! ie when one overpowers the other and bullies it into being lower down in the hierachy!
I think the fighting is due to the fact that the cage you have shown is way to small for two and they have nowhere to hide from each other, do their own thing and play with toys. If you are able to get a larger cage it would be best. The RSPCA insists on a cage of mimimum size approx, 60cm x 35cm flat floor space. Few commercial cages fulfil this. You can compensate if you are unable to get larger cages by giving lots of play-out time, making a playpen from a large box for supervised use, contantly changing toys and giving things such as chew sticks and old card boxes to trash and climb in and over to provide stimulation. You need to so this anyway so your hamsters are happy mentally having lots of natural things to do. The best toys are the simplest...empty tissue boxes, egg boxes, toilet roll tubes to climb through. You dont have to buy expensive stuff

Yeah, I'm thinking about getting a playpen for them. With me supervising them of course. I MIGHT get a bigger cage/thing for them but I'm not too sure because I'm leaving for Australia next year...And Aquariums/Tanks are quite difficult to clean =x
Lol. I have to ask my mom first about this though.

If you are keeping them in different cages, they should never interact unless you are trying to put them back together. It's too stressful for them otherwise. Are you bringing them with you??? What's the relevance of moving to Australia? Tanks can be a bit difficult only due to the weight, otherwise they are not that hard to clean.

relevance of Australia is even if they were banned there it would be financially prohibitive to bring them into the country.
