I gave my ham a jam jar and put chinchilla sand inside for him to take a bath in. He went there right away but he kicked all the sand out of the jar and rolls around in an almost empty jar. Anyone have any tips on how to keep him from kicking all the sand out?
I guess you could punch holes in the lid and put the lid on while he is inside for his bath. But it sounds like he has a ball kicking all the sand out! Seems like a great hamster game! Why don't you just put his jar in a bin that catches all the sand and then just pour it back in the jar when he is done?
Incidently, when he is rolling around on his back in the jar, he is putting his scent all over it and is claiming it as his own. He must really love it!
That's one of the reasons I never left sand baths in all the time. I put sand in the carrier I put the critter into while I clean their tank or cage. Cage gets cleaned - hamster gets cleaned - sand stays where it's supposed to be.
The other reasons I don't leave the bath in: Potty, Pantry & Bed.
