He's at it again
I put a post up a few weeks ago about the issue Im having with Harley chewing his cage. Well I followed a very helpful tip about using cardboard on the places he chews but he shredded it to pieces and just carried on. I am growing concerned because he could easily cause harm and I just want to know if you guys have any extra tips that could help me.
I know I could move him into a new cage without the bars but I personally like cages with bars.
Any tips would be really appreciated and taken into great consideration and tried!
Thanks for reading
xx

Re: He's at it again
Hi!
I purchased some large wood chews from wilkinsons (£1 each) and jammed them in the bars where honey chews.
Seems to work.. just have to put up with that noise now.

Re: He's at it again
I have been looking at an assortment of chews for him but don't want to purchase if he just sticks his nose up at them. I did buy a set of around 6 wooden chews filled with goodies inside but he's not even keen!! There just sat in his cage and I am seriously thinking about getting rid of them. I have brought him a hanging wooden nut toy which does get attention from him but enough to stop him from chewing the cage bars.
Any good chew toys out there??

Re: He's at it again
The key is to put a large enough chew in the area they go to, the chew in honeys cage is literally jammed in the bars
I found it was no good just putting one in the cage.. honey just used to sit on it.

Re: He's at it again
I've seen it reccommended to clip a peg to the bars and see if he takes an interest in that
Sometimes hamsters will bar chew no matter what you do and it simply becomes a habit.
It would be better for him to have a non bar cage then a sore nose

I guess Ill have to look for a non bar cage if this persists. I am currently looking for new cages now for him but am stuck between so many. I have a list of all the ones I like but I'll have to cross out all the bar cages if this persists. I am still heading out to my local pet store saturday so I can pick up some new toys for him. I will also try putting and wedging something to chew in between the cage bars and see how this goes. I will let you know what happens.

Re: He's at it again
This might sounds strange, but if he chew in one particular area then try getting the top of an egg box or some other stiff cardboard, and use either cable ties/twist ties (or twine, in a pinch) to attach the cardboard to the OUTSIDE of the cage. It wont look too pretty, but it means he wont be able to get his mouth around the bars to chew.

Re: He's at it again
I perspexed my hamster heaven when Maisie was bar chewing, There is a thred on here about it: here you go
This way all the side are perspexed to prevent bar chewing but the top is open for good air circulation and monkey barring alot cheaper than a new cage x
