Waking during the day
I have noticed recently that Lera frequently wakes up during the day, not just to eat and drink but will more often stand on her back legs waiting to be picked up. At first it was nice to see her but she seems to be doing it more often and for longer periods.
We have tried to leave her and not get into the habit of picking her up but she is very social. It doesn't help that she knows her name and is really responsive to my voice.
Is such broken sleep doing damage to her health and what can I do to to encourage her to sleep more in the day?
From what I can gather, she definitely wakes up in the late evening and goes nuts in her wheel, but will also use her wheel for short periods in the day.

Re: Waking during the day
Its perfectly fine for a hamster to Not be nocturnal, as long as shes got enough sleep at night. I have a book around here that tells you how to wake them in the day.

Re: Waking during the day
I can see Lera is a dwarf. It is very common for them to be up in the day. One of mine Huxley was up for an hour this morning on his wheel & he normally wakes around 3pm for an hour or so. Huxley along with my other dwarfs aren't up all night either they will have short sleeps throughout the night.
Perfectly normal, so don't be concerned at picking her up in the day I do with mine. It's nice too see them then.

Re: Waking during the day
If your hamster wakes up by choice during the day, then there is nothing you can do but it won't damage her health. It's only if you purposely wake them up that it can make them ill.

Re: Waking during the day
Noodles wakes up in the day. I only realised this as I have been off work with flu for the past week! Yesterday she was up and her Dad tried to pick her up and she nibbled him! She wanted her food, not cuddles!!! I like a lady with a mind of her own
